The Mapping AMID project developed a series of maps and visualisations of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District between Sheffield and Rotherham. Working with Sheffield City Council and multiple stakeholders Live Works sought to produce a coherent package of material that clearly communicated AMID as existing and its future vision.

2021 – 22 / Sheffield/Rotherham / in partnership with Sheffield City Council

Mapping AMID was the first project of a year-long ‘Project Stack’ collaboration between the School of Architecture and Sheffield City Council. AMID is the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District that lies between Sheffield and Rotherham and consists of four campuses, involving multiple stakeholders including The University of Sheffield, Hallam University, Sheffield City Council and Rotherham MBC. AMID aims to foster enterprise, innovation, skills & training, employment and research in manufacturing, health and wellbeing, digital technology and food.

Live Works worked with SCC and in collaboration with other stakeholders to produce a coherent set of maps and visualisations that clearly communicated AMID as it is currently, and its future vision.

This ‘Project Stack’ benefited from the integration of design and research from Live Works, Live Projects and MArch studio. After Mapping AMID, the Live Project Connecting AMID explored how innovation opportunities could be opened up across the area by making connections between local communities and AMID. This was then followed by MArch Studio Collaborative Production which focussed on developing site-specific design proposals for Attercliffe that focused on how innovations in technology, manufacturing and urban regeneration can be made more inclusive.
